In my 27 years in the private practice of psychiatry, I have certainly seen my share of changes in the field over that time. There is a distinct increase in the percentage of male patients I see in my practice now compared to when I started. The amount of ADHD I treat in both children and adults has also grown over the years for a variety of reasons. However, the biggest surprise to me has little to do with the type of patient I meet with or the actual diagnosis being treated. Frosted Flakes Are Grrrreat, People Are Grateful

In my quarter-century of private practice in psychiatry, I have had the opportunity to work with patients who have a variety of conditions. Many of my patients over the years have dealt with substance abuse issues and at one time or another that is what brought them into the office or the hospital. One of the delightful parts of practice is seeing a patient who is in recovery and working his or her program. The new age of accessible mental health information

When I attended the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry for my residency training in psychiatry, one of the real treats was having the opportunity to meet with the school's namesake, "Dr. Karl," himself. He along with his brother Will and his father C.F. founded the Menninger Clinic in the early part of the 20th Century in Topeka, Kansas. The clinic and hospital along with the training programs served as shining lights to those who wished to pursue a career in psychiatry and other related mental health disciplines. [Read More]
